Masters Academy Values
To provide our students with cutting edge martial arts training in a safe, fun and friendly atmosphere.
Fitness for life
We believe that fitness and health are the cornerstones to a happy, productive life. For this reason all our training is geared to developing fitness and maintaining health through progressive resistance. Fitness is composed of aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility/ range of motion all of which are developed in martial arts training. Our grading syllabus is designed to progressively build fitness and skills based around sport science principles. The chief instructors are also constantly updating their training in the latest developments in the fitness/ nutrition industry and share this information with assistant instructors and students.
Fighting Skills
Fundamentally martial arts training should improve your fighting skills. If it doesn’t then you are not studying a functional martial art. After a few months/ years of training you should be better able to defend yourself whether it is on the street, ring or cage. The complete mixed martial artist should have striking skills, grappling skills, weapon skills and self defence skills. We offer classes in all these areas for students that want to develop into well rounded martial artists.
Fun & Friendly
We all like to train and hang out with friends so the atmosphere at Masters Academy is kept fun, friendly and relaxed. This means we do not tolerate people with bad attitudes, bullies or massive egos. We like to cultivate a tribe mentality. We are the Masters Academy Tribe. We look after each other, respect each other and push each other to improve. We also try to make training fun. Every session is different so you will never do the same class twice so boredom won’t be a factor, we also incorporate lots of fun games and drills to keep the energy high and give everyone a laugh. If you are not having fun why do it?
Instructor Values
These are the values that we expect our instructors to internalise:
Love
You have to love what you are doing if you are going to be a great instructor. Anything less than love won’t cut it, people will see through you. This means having a true passion for martial arts and everything associated with it. More importantly though is that you have to love your students. You are there to serve them, not the other way around. Serve your students and they will repay with loyalty and respect. Remember service comes first.
Loyal
Let’s be honest in the end everyone is loyal to themselves first and that is a good thing. What we mean by loyal is loyalty to your students by putting them first when you make decisions and loyalty to your instructors by crediting them for the information they have shared with you. That’s it.
Lead by example
Instructors are role models for all students (whether they want to be or not). So you need to keep yourself fit and healthy, you need to maintain your skills in the areas you teach and you have to act respectfully and responsibly with everyone you have contact with. Don’t get complacent or lazy. Students look up to you and copy what you do and how you behave. Act professionally whenever you are dealing with students or other instructors and everyone will respect you more.
Learn everyday
Learning in martial arts is a never-ending journey. There is always more to learn and improve, so keep and open mind and be humble. Humility shows you care more a bout your students than you do about yourself, which helps them trust and bond with you. Everyone can teach you something. Keep a permanently open mind and absorb from everyone regardless of rank, age or experience. If you stop growing, you die.
Student Values
These are the values we expect our students to develop:
Careful
Be careful with yourself and your training partners. Take it slowly and easily in the beginning, let your body adapt gradually to the new demands you are placing on it. Rest whenever you need and listen to your body. Also look after your training partner, they have offered their bodies in good faith to help you improve, don’t abuse this trust. Being careful helps you avoid injuries and keep the atmosphere relaxed and friendly.
Courteous
Treat everyone with respect. We are all members of the Masters Academy Tribe and therefore we need to treat each other well. So be courteous and polite and you will be welcomed by everyone.
Consistency
Consistency is the foundation of skill. Irregular training leads to irregular results. You need to commit to training 2-4 times per week regularly to progressively improve your skills and fitness. If you can’t come to class make up extra session next week or work out at home or at the gym. Habits made are broken within 3 weeks so you need to make training a habit by attending regularly. Once you are out of the habit its 10 times harder to get back into it.
